The Next New Thing

It seems that technology is moving at a such a fast pace that once I am finished writing my blog this new media will already be invented and become old news. Perhaps that statement is a bit exaggerated. New media comes in all kinds of forms and depending on its existence can have positive and negative effects. However, I really feel that New Media needs to be spread in the business world. It would be great if we could use this new tool as a form of life communication via video with people that are sitting on the other side of the world. This tool will have options to post presentations, spreadsheets, charts, forecasts and outlook for this particular company. As a user you will be able to indicate which information you would like to share with the public and which remains private. This was you will be able to research other companies and learn their business strategies. New Media is mostly used to network or entertainment, but I am sure if taken seriously it could be introduced to the business world as The Next New Thing.

Our Class Wiki-So Far

I am very motivated to contribute to our Class Wiki Page, but still need to figure out how to do it. A significant amount of information was collected to add to the New Media and Transportation page. I only have to learn how to add/revise my info. The goal is to have my contribution completed by next week. To be continued…

P2P File Sharing

“Sharing is Caring” said Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent, one of the most successful peer-to-peer programs ever. File sharing is defined as making files available for other individuals to download. The most common method is the use of peer-to-peer software, such as BitTorrent.  P2P networks can be used for sharing content such as audio, video, data or anything in digital format. Analysts at CacheLogic, an Internet-traffic analysis firm in Cambridge, England, report that BitTorrent traffic accounts for more than one-third of all data sent across the Internet”( www.wired.com ). Cohen realized that dividing a file and have several users uploading would speed up the process. Therefore, the more popular the file the faster the downloading. You must be willing to share in order to receive files quicker. Strange how subconsciously a network is being built, where we depend on the amount of users for faster speed.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Some things will never change, and no matter how Private or Secure a website seems, the user will always have doubts when posting their personal information. This is a major reason why many surveys and comments cannot be counted fully and accurately. Since fraud and identity theft are major concerns, it has become difficult to freely maneuver online. Privacy is he eye of the participant and having the control to access information that we need or are interested in. However, often we will log on to a page or perform research on a particular website and have hundred of cookies or junk mail following the profiled user. As far as confidentiality it is an extension of privacy but focusing primarily on data. Therefore all the information we are providing to an online source, such as name, DOB, address, status, etc. is considered data and should be protected from inappropriate disclosures. Privacy and confidentiality are two things we should always consider when browsing or signing up to online things. Would a person ever be informed if one of the websites violated their Privacy and Confidentiality agreement?

Improving Baruch

Baruch has already established some forms of new media such as Wikipedia and Facebook. However, i would focus on the awareness of these applications. Students should be aware of their opportunity to post comments, suggestions and ways for improving our scholarly environment. The Wiki Page for Baruch is very plain and it does not represent the new generation and up to date technological effects. Professors and staff should come together and use the opportunity to introduce new media to new students as a vital communication tool. We have the means and an incredible amount of students available to support Baruch, but new media has to be announced over a loud microphone so that everyone can hear and follow instructions.

Creativity and new media

Creativity

Creativity is defined as the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc. Today, creativity is highly supported and allowed to be expressed through new media such as You Tube. It allows users to upload videos and show their originality. Twitter is another way of expressing creativity, and as said in the article by New York Times:  “Technology companies have been the most active in relying on others to innovate for them”. Many people believe that producers are responsible for the innovative idea or product, but in fact consumers come up with ideas for products. “Open-source software companies leave innovation up to users, and companies like Bug Labs let people build their own hardware”.  This is a great approach for start up companies who are still trying to define their products.
